Campaign songs have a long tradition in American politics, from when William Henry Harrison’s campaign adopted “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too” back in 1840 to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s campaign’s use of “Happy Days Are Here Again” in 1932 to Bill Clinton calling up Feetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” in his initial run for President in 1992.
But Bernie Sander’s grassroots campaign has created a new phenomenon. It has inspired folks to write songs about his campaign; lots and lots of folks.
This particular post concerns a wonderful and unique collection of songs created by volunteers from Bernie’s campaign produced by Mearcstapa (Lancelot Schaubert). It’s titled “Songs For Bernie.”
It’s a tribute to Bernie that his campaign would inspire such creativity from such a diverse group of artists represented in this effort.
I loved this collection of home-grown protest songs from the start. The range is wide… from folk to rap to stand up and shout kind of music. Not a single one is boring, and all are from the heart.
Give ‘em a listen. Leave a tip. I think you’ll be impressed.
