When we decided to write and dedicate a song to the movement that Bernie Sanders inspired, we realized the ideals that he stands for go far beyond his campaign or his candidacy. They are rooted in our history. They are embedded in our communal hearts and minds.
As teens in the 1960s, we remembered the protests of the day… against the Viet Nam war, for civil rights and integration… and the songs that those movements generated. We decided that we missed not only those songs, but the sense of joining together in a greater common goal.
We found that sense of participating in something larger than a candidate in the Bernie Sanders campaign. We also realized that the movement he inspired is, in some ways, a continuation of the fight for some of those grand goals... basic human rights, income equality, getting big money out of politics, and restoring a true democracy.
So we rolled back the clock at bit at the beginning of our music video, “The Song That Needs to be Sung,” to give viewers and listeners an historical perspective and a sense of the larger picture in which Bernie Sander’s campaign plays such an important role today… “for all that is changed, for the work that remains...”
